The following should be conducted prior to leaving the island or going to a shelter:

1. Clean out the refridgerator of all perishable foods.

2. Turn the breakers off on the main power supply box on the inside of the unit (usually a grey metal box on the wall) to the unit or building. The electrical meter is located either along the garage or outside on older buildings, for newer buildings, between the phases on a wall; or inside a storage closet or under the stairwell, or on a separate free standing mini wall at the front of the property. In complexes the meters are labelled with a number identifying each unit.  Additionally, turn off all main water supply to the unit.  These are outside on the ground inside black boxes and the unit should have its number marked on the shut off valve identifying the unit.  Additionally, turn off all the water valves under the toilets, sinks, basins, hot water heater, washer etc.

3. Secure all windows and doors and personal property before vacating the unit to a shelter or off island. Together with storing inside of the unit all patio furniture/bbq grills and items that can become flying objects in the high winds. Units on the canal and tenants with boats or other water sports equipment/vehicles should have them removed from the water and safely stored on high land.

4. Clean the tub and fill with water for use after the storm passes for flushing toilets and general clean-up. Keep bleach, lysol & pinesol products along with any other cleaning supplies handy for when you return to the unit. Purchase extra supplies such as dry foods/canned foods/bottled water (1 gallon per person per day up to 10 days)/batteries/ flashlights/candles/oil lamps or lanterns so you can have when you return should power be disconnected for an extended period of time.  If you don't have a generator then make sure you have a bbq with a gas cylinder or coals for cooking if the power is out for an extended period of time.

5. Secure all personal items and raise them up off the floors. Plastic containers can be purchased from any of the hardware stores: AL Thompsons Home Depot; Uncle Bills; Cox Lumber; Kirk Home Centre,  Price Right or Cost-U-Less.

6. Take all pets with you and check with the local shelter that houses pets for availability if you are needing to have your pet housed during the storm. This should be done quite early or at lease when you have decided to whether the storm on island and in a shelter. Cayman Pet Paradise, Tele: 947-1334/Fax: 947-1331.

7. Make sure you have all your travel documents secured and current.
